Team Brick

©2008 Codie McLachlan / Edmonton Journal / Canwest News Service

Yesterday I went to West Edmonton Mall to shoot a presser at the Ice Palace for the Brick's annual super novice hockey tournament. These are a couple of the shots I ended up with.

During the shooting, I had some really frustrating things happen. First, both my batteries started dying. OK, I can handle that. But then my 1D stopped working; it just froze. The camera was still on, but it wouldn't autofocus, and I couldn't change the shutter speed or aperture.

After I charged the batteries, the problem seemed to go away.

Yeesh.

Farmer's Market

I found this while I was wandering around the Farmer's Market on Whyte Ave on Saturday.
It was the 25th anniversary of the farmer's market there, and they had solstice hours... meaning they were actually open when I was awake for once!

Train vs. Car

A totalled car site by a train track just off of 97 St. and 60 Ave in Edmonton on June 10, 2008. Apparently the car was hit by a train at the track.

Mural Painting

Last week I covered the night time painting of a mural dedicated to the late Ed Carson, a special needs teacher and social activist who died earlier this month at the age of 49. The mural was projected onto the upper wall of St. Angela's Elementary school on the north side of Edmonton, and a group of artists painted what was projected onto the wall.

Year End!

Few things say "year end" like a photo of my mom's watch.
Anyways, the school year is over, so from now until, oh, mid-September sometime, you won't be seeing very many studio shots on here. But you WILL see news and sports and feature stuff, so that will be cool!

Anyways, I felt kind of dirty taking that shot... I needed a macro lens, and I didn't have one handy (a friend had an EF-S lens, but my camera doesn't take those). SO I borrowed my friend's Nikon camera with a 60mm f/2.8 macro lens attached to it.

Nikon glass is SHARP.

Turkish Delight

Enjoy Turkish Delight? This was taken at Mor, a new Turkish restaurant in western Edmonton. Fun fact: the word "mor" is Turkish for "purple," and the restaurant certainly keeps that colour theme going!

Copying Edward Weston

I had an assignment which required me to look at a vintage photograph and recreate with my own model and lighting and set up and such, so I decided to rip off one of Edward Weston's amazingly named nudes. The title of the original, if you're interested, is "Nude," however I prefer to call my version "An Analysis of a Dystopian Society As Outlined in One of George Orwell's Novels as it Compares to One by Anthony Burgess."

Anyway, enjoy.

I photographed Jonny Mericana last week. He used to play with an Edmonton group called the Murder City Sparrows, but now he's playing solo. Check him out this Friday at Axis Café with guest Jay Gilday!

Streets of Edmonton

So last night I went to Whyte Ave with Anna to shoot a critique that was based on life on the streets. My original idea was to shoot a photo from the median in the middle of the road at a really slow shutter speed showing cars going by, but in the end I wasn't really liking the shots too much. So as I was walking away dejected and disappointed, I found this shopping cart by a bus stop. The light on Anna's hair is actually light from a street lamp that, through careful framing, doesn't actually appear in the photograph. I was pretty happy with the outcome of this photo, actually.

Anna is a real trooper, too! She stays still for my long exposures--I think only two or three of the 20 photos I took of this scene had any motion blur.
