Photo Illustration - Drugs in Prison

I was asked to illustrate an article on drugs in prison, and this is what I came up with.

Fugly Duckling

Which is the odd one out?
I'd say that chick on the left is looking kinda suspicious...

Copying Edward Weston

I had an assignment which required me to look at a vintage photograph and recreate with my own model and lighting and set up and such, so I decided to rip off one of Edward Weston's amazingly named nudes. The title of the original, if you're interested, is "Nude," however I prefer to call my version "An Analysis of a Dystopian Society As Outlined in One of George Orwell's Novels as it Compares to One by Anthony Burgess."

Anyway, enjoy.

Jonny Mericana

I photographed Jonny Mericana last week. He used to play with an Edmonton group called the Murder City Sparrows, but now he's playing solo. Check him out this Friday at Axis Café with guest Jay Gilday!

Streets of Edmonton

So last night I went to Whyte Ave with Anna to shoot a critique that was based on life on the streets. My original idea was to shoot a photo from the median in the middle of the road at a really slow shutter speed showing cars going by, but in the end I wasn't really liking the shots too much. So as I was walking away dejected and disappointed, I found this shopping cart by a bus stop. The light on Anna's hair is actually light from a street lamp that, through careful framing, doesn't actually appear in the photograph. I was pretty happy with the outcome of this photo, actually.

Anna is a real trooper, too! She stays still for my long exposures--I think only two or three of the 20 photos I took of this scene had any motion blur.

... And lastly, a hockey fight image from the Oilers vs. Flames game on Monday. Poor Moreau...

This was a group shot of some actors from the play While We're Young surrounding the playwright, Don Hannah. The play is premiering at the Timms Centre this week.

On Friday night, I shot the Edmonton Oilers vs. the Dallas Stars game at Rexall Place. What a night! Out of the games I've shot, this one seemed to go remarkably fast with a lot less timeouts than I'm used to.

It was also fun running back to the media room in between every period--the room being on the exact opposite side of the building. But I managed, and during the third period I left the concourse to shoot some action from ice level.

Doug Hoyer Album Cover

I took this photo a couple of weeks ago for my friend Doug Hoyer, who is a singer/songwriter based out of Edmonton. The original shots are for his album cover, but I was also really satisfied with this crop, so I thought I would put it up.

Musicians are some of my favorite people to photograph, especially in a promotional setting. You should check out Doug's music at http://www.myspace.com/doughoyer . His stuff is definitely worth a listen.

I should also mention we travelled to Germany together in the summer of 2006; he was playing keyboards for my own band, the Blazing Violets.

Light

Here is my critique submission for this week. I had to centre around the theme of "light."

Really. Don't pick up the soap.
Special thanks to Ian Vaydik and Mendel Perkins for posing for this.
I won't mention who is who.

Women's Provincial Curling Finals in Wainwright

Photos by Codie McLachlan / Edmonton Journal

I spent my Sunday in Wainwright shooting the women's provincial finals in curling. The weather was hellish, and the drive back was horrifying!

It begins.

So I have decided to start keeping a blog. I tried this once before, and I must admit, I was quite successful at keeping it maintained for a while... but I eventually forgot about it and stopped posting.

I intend to try keep this one updated at least fairly frequently. The idea behind it is to show photos that I've taken that I am particularly proud of (I am a photographer, in case you haven't read the "About Me" part at the top of the page), but I'll probably go off on rants and such occasionally.

You have been warned.
