Blog overhaul...?

I've created another blog with all the same posts from this one... I'm trying to decide which I like more. For now, I will keep both active.

Visit my new blog and let me know which one YOU prefer!

Photoshoot with Nicky

Here are a couple of shots I did for my cousin, Nicky last week. Nicky is a dance instructor in Montreal.
These photos are being printed as posters which will be used for advertising in Montreal.

More Alien Bees

©2008 Codie McLachlan

Another photo from my quick Alien Bees test last night.
I'm posting this one for the "lulz" expression on Anna's face.

And to showcase her hot new red hair.

First Shots with Alien Bees

©2008 Codie McLachlan

So after waiting almost two weeks on shipping, I've finally received my new Alien Bees strobes. Naturally, I had to test them out on my girlfriend, Anna (who appears in numerous photos throughout this blog).

I've noticed that when you upload to the blog, colour contrast seems to decrease a little bit, which is unfortunate. But I digress.

The above photo was lit with two Alien Bees B1600 strobes (MOAR POWAR). To Anna's left (our right), there is a large size softbox, and a very slight fill (I tend to go for dramatic ratios when I'm screwing around--yay for split lighting) with a gigantic umbrella is off to her right.

Junior Baseball

©2008, Codie McLachlan / Edmonton Journal / Canwest News Service

I shot the quarter finals of the AAA World Jr. Baseball Championships at Telus Field last week. Action shots from the first four innings, plus a portrait of Canadian manager Greg Hamilton (first photo). The two teams were Canada and Australia.

COMING SOON: Photos of the Cuban defectors!

Maximum Fighting Championship at River Cree Casino. It was a bloodbath night full of dudes spurting gore upon each other. I was squeamish at first... then I got over it.

Photos by the Sunset

I was playing some frisbee with Anna last night while we were passing time, being a little bored. At some point, I looked to the west and saw that the sun was setting, and I got the urge to practice some fill flash technique.

Kudos to me for having such a photogenic and cooperative girlfriend!

Sweet Bicycles

©2008 Codie McLachlan / Edmonton Journal / Canwest News Service

Last week I went to the Bikeworks shop near Whyte Ave to photograph a guy by the name of Chris Chan (top photo) and his ultra cool bicycle. That thing is just loaded with LED lights, so I took him into a dark room in the bike shop and had him turn on all the lights. No flash was used for that photo; the LED lights on the bicycle did the job quite nicely! Also note that there is a coconut mounted on the handlebars.

While shooting this, I also ran into Robert Park (bottom photo), who I went to photo school with. He was a year ahead of me and is getting ready to ride his bicycle to Victoria. Unfortunately, it isn't the bicycle pictured that he will be riding. Maybe next time!

Team Brick

©2008 Codie McLachlan / Edmonton Journal / Canwest News Service

Yesterday I went to West Edmonton Mall to shoot a presser at the Ice Palace for the Brick's annual super novice hockey tournament. These are a couple of the shots I ended up with.

During the shooting, I had some really frustrating things happen. First, both my batteries started dying. OK, I can handle that. But then my 1D stopped working; it just froze. The camera was still on, but it wouldn't autofocus, and I couldn't change the shutter speed or aperture.

After I charged the batteries, the problem seemed to go away.

Farmer's Market

I found this while I was wandering around the Farmer's Market on Whyte Ave on Saturday.
It was the 25th anniversary of the farmer's market there, and they had solstice hours... meaning they were actually open when I was awake for once!

Train vs. Car

©2008 Codie McLachlan / The Edmonton Journal / Canwest News Service

A totalled car site by a train track just off of 97 St. and 60 Ave in Edmonton on June 10, 2008. Apparently the car was hit by a train at the track.

Mural Painting

Last week I covered the night time painting of a mural dedicated to the late Ed Carson, a special needs teacher and social activist who died earlier this month at the age of 49. The mural was projected onto the upper wall of St. Angela's Elementary school on the north side of Edmonton, and a group of artists painted what was projected onto the wall.

Rollover on Ellerslie and 34th

An EMS member inspects a flipped car on 34 St. and Ellerslie Rd. as the STARS ambulance helicopter prepares to airlift the injured driver to hospital. A resident said he heard the accident around 11:30 am on June 3rd.

Year End!

Few things say "year end" like a photo of my mom's watch.
Anyways, the school year is over, so from now until, oh, mid-September sometime, you won't be seeing very many studio shots on here. But you WILL see news and sports and feature stuff, so that will be cool!

Anyways, I felt kind of dirty taking that shot... I needed a macro lens, and I didn't have one handy (a friend had an EF-S lens, but my camera doesn't take those). SO I borrowed my friend's Nikon camera with a 60mm f/2.8 macro lens attached to it.

Nikon glass is SHARP.

Turkish Delight

©2008 Codie McLachlan / Edmonton Journal / Canwest News Service

Enjoy Turkish Delight? This was taken at Mor, a new Turkish restaurant in western Edmonton. Fun fact: the word "mor" is Turkish for "purple," and the restaurant certainly keeps that colour theme going!
